1-116 grew out of Homage in the Squares, which itself came from work looking at subverting scientific iconography.

The core idea was to take something useful, in this case the periodic table of the elements, and turn it into something "useless", conforming with the stereotypical (but wrong) idea that scientists view art as useless.

As the periodic table orders all the elements that make the world, Homage categorizes a world of art and artists.
