"This Used to be a Painting, and Before That, it was a Photograph"
October 2007
40 x 30 cm
oil on canvas
This started out as a photograph of two young women using a 1960s minicomputer. I cropped a random part out of it, then printed it through a printer almost out of toner. I projected the resulting streaky, messed-up image onto canvas, and painted over it as realistically patiently, and carefully as I could. Then I scraped all the paint off with a knife. Hints of red, green, and blue have been added to refer back to the picture's origins. It's all about image reproduction, traditional techniques, digital processing, and the unreliability of technology.
