"Evolution
Requires Imperfect Copies"
May 2009

I have been thinking a lot about painstaking analogue/manual methods of
reproduction. This was inspired by a recollection of a tape of The
Queen is Dead I had at school. It had been recorded slightly too
"loud", and was slightly distorted and clipped. When I got an
original copy, I didn't like it, because it didn't sound
"right" -- it was too clean and civilized. Recently I was
reading about evolution, and the phrase "evolution requires
imperfect copies" stuck in my head. I thought it applied to art --
the imperfections and differences in the way an artist sees and
reproduces the world are what make painting so interesting. I couldn't
resist the Warhol reference.
